I have a confession to make.

For the first few years of my career, I wrote grant applications the way most artists do – stare at the form until it makes even less sense, procrastinate as a stress response, write something heartfelt and vaguely important sounding, hit send at the very last minute and then panic–refresh my inbox every day for the next six to eight weeks.  

I got some grants. I missed a lot more. And I had absolutely no idea why.

Then I started assessing them.

The first question, most artists can answer. The second one tends to produce a pause. A vague gesture toward Instagram. An honest "I have no idea."

Most grants programs evolve incrementally. A new question gets added here. Assessment criteria get tweaked there. Guidelines expand to address last year's confusing applications. It's the organisational equivalent of that old joke about designing a horse by committee - somehow you end up with a camel.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about arts grant writing in Australia: assessors aren’t looking for the most talented artist. They’re looking for the artist who can best prove they’ll deliver what they’re promising.
