What Is Coaching, Actually? (And can it transform your creative career?)
Let's be honest: "coaching" has become one of those buzzwords that means everything and nothing at the same time.
Life coach. Business coach. Career coach. Wellness coach. Mindset coach.
Everyone's a coach now, and if you're a creative trying to figure out if coaching could help you, the noise is overwhelming.
So let me cut through it.
What Coaching Is (And What It Definitely Isn't)
Let's clear this up right now.
Coaching is NOT:
· Therapy. We're not unpacking your childhood or diagnosing anything. (If you need therapy, get therapy. It's amazing. I'm a BIG fan.)
· Consulting. I'm not showing up with a binder full of solutions and telling you what to do without any space for your input.
· Mentoring. Though there's some overlap when I share what's worked for me and my clients.
· Magic. Some problems are gravity problems and you can’t change gravity. For example, if you don’t want to charge people to see your work because of your values I have nothing but respect for that. But it might better serve you to treat this as a hobby rather than your income. Working with me can help you identify the viability of your plans and explore the opportunities to make it more viable unless, like in this example, that conflicts with the way you want to work.
Coaching IS:
· A structured partnership focused on getting you from where you are to where you want to be
· A process that helps you gain clarity, build strategies, and take action or solve problems
· Support and accountability so you don't just set goals and then... forget about them
· A space to explore what you actually want - not what you think you should want or what Instagram tells you to want
· Evidence-based practices that help you identify and overcome obstacles and create sustainable change (not just vibes and vision boards)
Think of it this way: therapy looks backward to heal. Consulting tells you what to do. Mentoring shares what worked for someone else. Coaching looks forward and helps you figure out what works for you.
All of these have value. But coaching is specifically about movement - getting unstuck, gaining clarity, and moving forward.
What Actually Happens in a Coaching Session?
Good question. Because "coaching" can look wildly different depending on who you're working with.
Here's what it looks like with me:
We start with where you are
· What's working?
· What are you struggling with right now?
· What would make the biggest difference to your life or business if it shifted?
Then we dig into where you want to go
· What does success actually look like for you? (And I mean you, not the version of success you think you're supposed to want or what looks good purely based on optics.)
· What's standing between you and that vision?
· What beliefs, habits, patterns, or circumstances are keeping you stuck?
Then we build a plan
· What are the actionable steps you can take right now?
· What needs to shift - mindset, systems, pricing, boundaries, all of the above?
· What support or resources do you actually need?
And then we make it happen
· You take action between sessions (yay, homework!)
· I provide accountability, feedback, and course correction where needed
· We adjust as you learn what works and what doesn't
It's not about me having all the answers. It's about helping you find your answers - and then giving you the tools, strategy, and support to actually act on them.
And yeah, sometimes I'll share what I've seen work (or spectacularly fail) for other clients or in my own career. Because why reinvent the wheel when we can learn from each other?
Why Creatives Especially Benefit from Coaching
Here's the thing about creative careers: they're messy.
There's no roadmap. No promotion track. No HR department. No boss telling you what to focus on or when you're doing well or what to do next.
You're making it up as you go - which is both incredibly freeing and completely overwhelming.
And when you hit a wall? You're often figuring it out alone.
Here's what I see with creative clients who come to coaching:
You're stuck in indecision paralysis. You know something needs to change, but you don't know what or how. Coaching helps you get clear on what you actually want and create a realistic plan to get there - without the spiraling.
You're drowning in overwhelm. You're juggling seventeen things and have no idea what to prioritise. Coaching helps you sort through what actually matters and focus on what will move the needle instead of just keeping you busy.
You're undercharging (and you know it). You know you should raise your rates, but every time you think about it, your brain screams "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?" Coaching helps you reframe your value, build confidence, and price for sustainability.
You're burnt out. You're working all the time and still not making enough money. Something has to give. Coaching helps you redesign your business so it actually supports your life instead of consuming it.
You're pivoting (or thinking about it). You want a new direction but don't know how to get there without blowing up everything you've built. Coaching helps you bridge from where you are to where you want to be without the chaos.
You lack accountability. You set goals with the best intentions... and then life happens. Coaching gives you structure, deadlines, and someone who'll lovingly call you out when you're sabotaging yourself.
You need someone who actually gets it. Your family doesn't understand what you do. You work in a silo without anyone to turn to who has been stuck in the same position. There’s nowhere to learn how to do this and you’re making it up as you go.
(Haven’t we all??) Coaching gives you a space where you and your creative work are fully supported, sense-checked, and offered expert advice when you need it from someone who has been there and gotten ALL the t-shirts.
Sound familiar? Yeah, you’re not alone.
What You Can Expect from Coaching with Me
I'm not here to tell you what to do or hand you a templated "10-step system to creative success." I hate any advice that is one size fits all. No two things in the creative world are the same, why would the solution be the same?
I'm here to help you figure out what's right for you - and then support you in making it happen.
Here's my approach:
· Evidence-based practice. I bring organisational psychology, 15+ years in the arts sector, and practical tools grounded in actual research. Not just vibes and vision boards.
· No bullshit, lots of compassion. I'm direct. I'll challenge you when you need it. But I also deeply understand how hard this work is.
· Strategic and practical. We're not just talking about your feelings (though we might). We're building actionable plans - whether that's securing a $50K grant, finally raising your rates, or navigating a complete career pivot.
· Customised to you. I don't have a cookie-cutter formula (blerg). We work on what matters to you, at the pace that makes sense for your actual life and business.
· Accountability that actually helps. I'm not here to make you feel bad when you don't do the thing. I'm here to help you figure out why you didn't do the thing - and what needs to shift so you can. Or, what your capacity ACTUALLY looks like so you can set yourself reasonable and achievable time goals rather than expecting to change the world in one day and hating yourself when you don’t.

Coaching doesn't magically solve everything. But it gives you the clarity, tools, and support to solve things and build something sustainable in the process.
How Does It Work? How Many Sessions Do You Need?
I offer both one-off sessions (The Power Hour) and a four-session package (The Deep Dive). Here's how to know which is right for you:
Choose The Power Hour if you:
· Have a specific, immediate challenge (a grant due next week, a pricing decision, a pitch you're nervous about)
· Want expert guidance and a clear action plan FAST
· Need a strategic intervention, not ongoing support
Choose The Deep Dive if you:
· Have bigger goals that need sustained focus (career pivot, business redesign, major funding applications)
· Want accountability and support over time, not just a one-time conversation
· Need to shift patterns and build new systems, not just solve a single problem
Both are valuable. It just depends on where you are and what you need right now.
Still Not Sure?
Book a free discovery call. We'll talk about where you are, what's keeping you stuck, and whether coaching makes sense for you right now. No pressure, no pitch - just an honest conversation.
